How to Blur the Background of a Photo

A softer background can draw attention to a person, product or other main subject. This guide explains how selective AI background blur works, how to choose an intensity and why some image edges need extra care.

1. Decide what you want to keep sharp

Before uploading, identify the main subject. A face, an entire person or a single product should remain in focus. If the photo has several people at different distances, automatic subject separation may not match your intention; try a source image with a clearer subject.

2. Choose a suitable starting image

Good lighting, reasonably high resolution and a visible contrast between subject and backdrop help the AI estimate the foreground. Hair, transparent glass and objects sharing colors with the background are more difficult. A photo with some natural depth already present often needs only gentle additional blur.

3. Open Blur Background and upload

Go to the EraseVaro Blur Background tool and choose a JPG, PNG or WEBP file. The editor shows the original photo, and the dedicated processing worker uses AI to estimate the main foreground region. You do not need to install desktop software.

4. Adjust the blur strength

Start around the lower end of the 10-100% slider if the scene has important context, such as a workspace or landscape. Use a stronger setting for a busy background that competes with the subject. This is a selective Gaussian blur, not a physically simulated camera lens, so the effect may differ from optical depth of field.

5. Review fine boundaries

After processing, inspect hair, glasses, product handles and the area around shoulders. A halo can appear where the AI foreground estimate is uncertain. If the result looks artificial, reduce the intensity or try a better-lit original instead of repeatedly applying blur to the edited file.

6. Consider the final destination

For a portrait, keep enough environment visible to avoid a cutout appearance. For a product listing, some marketplaces prefer an unblurred or white backdrop, so check their image requirements. For social posts, preview the image at phone size to confirm the subject still stands out.

7. Download and keep your original

Compare the generated result with your source photo, then download the processed image. EraseVaro charges one credit for a Blur Background edit. Keep your own unedited copy so you can return to the original if you want a different amount of blur later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I blur only the background without blurring the person?

Yes, this is the aim of AI subject separation. The subject stays sharp wherever the segmentation mask is correct; fine or low-contrast edges can still show imperfections.

Is this the same as portrait mode on a camera?

Not exactly. Camera portrait mode may use depth estimates or multiple cameras. EraseVaro estimates the subject in a single image and applies selective Gaussian blur.

What does a blur edit cost?

One Blur Background edit uses one EraseVaro credit. The Free plan currently includes three daily credits.
